Creative cooking

We like to get creative with quick meals in our house.  One of our favorite 'throw together' dishes revolves around some sort of sausage, and veggies served over whole grain noodles.

Dinner tonight: garlic and mozzarella chicken sausage sliced and sautéed with asparagus and mushrooms, Italian seasonings and a wedge of laughing cow Swiss. Once sausage is cooked simmer covered until asparagus is tender (about 20 min). Served over whole grain pasta. Delicious!

Tracking Calories


In order to lose weight you need to be burning more calories than you're consuming...however, this statement is usually taken the WRONG way.

Just being alive...all people burn a certain amount of calories BMR (basal metabolic rate) then you add in the calories you burn just moving around, possibly working out etc., and those are the calories you burn overall throughout the day....lots of people think ok I'm going to shoot for "1200 or less" calories per day in order to lose weight because I have to be burning at least 1200 calories every day....Are you guilty of this thought? Because I was guilty of it until recently. 
But here's the thing.....EVERYONE BURNS ATLEAST 1200 CALORIES JUST BEING ALIVE unless there's some underlying condition going on....

So you need way more than 1200 calories to lose weight. Why?? If you shoot to eat 1200 calories or lower your body tends to think you are trying to STARVE IT and will literally hold on to every once of fat you have ON your body...and begin to eat your muscle....even if you're working out and lifting weights. Our bodies do NOT like to be starved and will fight you.

So are you feeling frustrated because you're kicking your booty in your work outs, eating 1200 calories or lower (or maybe a bit higher) and still not seeing results? I've got a guess, your body WANTS MORE FOOD!

5 Pounds of Fat

Oh MY!!! Have you ever considered:  How much 5 extra pounds really look like on your body?  How 5 extra pounds of fat makes your body work harder?  How harmful 5 extra pounds of fat is on your heart, your liver, your pancreas?  And that is JUST 5 pounds!!! Imagine what an extra 10 or 20 or even more feels like?!?!? Do something good for yourself and your body! Clean eating and some regular exercise will help you feel so much better!

What is your fitness?

I don't really care for the gym, but I LOVE walking, and I enjoy a good workout DVD. What is your fitness?

Oatmeal Banana treats

These little oatmeal banana treats are delicious! Clean eating and healthy!! I think they would also be good with craisins or maybe dark chocolate chips!!! I did a quick calorie check on them, and they are about 40 calories a cookie.

3 mashed bananas (ripe)
1/3 cup apple sauce
2 cups oats
1/4 cup almond milk
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon

Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes

Start now

There are many people out there that believe that you have to start a new eating or exercise program on Monday.  The truth is, you should start when the moment strikes you.  That point at which you realized, "I need to change", is the point at which you need to start making changes.  That is when you will be most committed and most likely to succeed.


Something for everyone

It doesn't matter what type of exercise you do, as long as you are moving.  Anything from outdoor exercise (like biking, hiking, canoeing, running, or sports), going to the gym, workout DVD's, yardwork or cleaning, or playing with the kids, all burn calories. So, it doesn't matter what exercise you do, just keep doing SOMETHING!

Keep this in mind when you are feeling the urge to go crazy this weekend!! Just the simple act of tracking what you eat, can make a huge difference in what you eat AND portion control. HONEY!!! I love to sweeten things with honey - yogurt, oatmeal, peanut butter, I even like to drizzle a bit over steamed veggies. Easy Dinner idea!

This idea is courtesy of my friend, Jen Parker - Strong, Healthy, Happy.

What's for dinner? I looked in my veggie drawer and chopped up anything I could find, tossed with olive oil, dash of sea salt and baked for 30 min a 350. Yum! I used red bell pepper, Brussels sprouts, red onion and garlic. But you can use anything. What a great way to clean house!!
